Have you heard the cliched saying, “Form is temporary but class is permanent”? Well, the reason it is overused is because it’s true and Lewis Hamilton gave us more reason to use this cliche after the 2023 US GP. Despite his painful disqualification, Hamilton’s race at COTA was one of his best in a very long time and nothing can take that away from him. This is exactly what the ex-Ferrari boss also pointed out in his recent round-up of the weekend in Austin.
Peter Windsor highlighted the class of Hamilton during the weekend in Austin where he was consistently brilliant throughout all the racing action. However, the former boss also had some criticism to levy on Hamilton’s counterpart George Russell.

Putting aside the heartbreaking disqualification, Hamilton was a force to be reckoned with during the entire US GP weekend. His pace, performance, and focus were incredible throughout the weekend. If it wasn’t for Mercedes‘ shoddy strategy, the Brit could’ve clinched the race win as well, again, if we forget about the disqualification. However, this wasn’t the case on the other side of the Mercedes garage, and Windsor pointed that out in his latest YouTube video.
“Austin was a very big race for him because he was Lewis again and he did everything he possibly could and it worked. Throughout the weekend he’s been a strong force and he looked good,” said Windsor.
However, Windsor did not have the same opinion about Russell. In fact, it was quite the contrary. He expressed, “George has been a bit of a messy second driver this weekend with lots of track limit penalties and things like that and Lewis looked like a real class act.“
We can’t help but agree with the ex-Ferrari boss as he is spot-on about Hamilton’s performance, even though it was marred by a post-race disqualification.
However, these polar opposite performances can be a result of the level of comfort with the new upgrades the two drivers have at the moment.

No two drivers are the same and often have extremely different inputs about a car and how they like it. Currently, Hamilton and Russell are highlighting this aspect of the sport, as the current Mercedes upgrades are perfect for Hamilton, whereas Russell is struggling. The two drivers proved that with not only their performance over the weekend but their comments as well.

“But this is an improvement. This is one of the first upgrades that I’ve actually felt over the last two years. So that’s a positive, and we just need two or three times of this step to put us in super competitive mode, which I believe the guys can do,” the 38-year-old added.
“For me it’s been a really challenging day. I’ve been off the pace don’t really know why,” said Russell. “I can feel the improvements [in the car] but it’s been a bit of a strange day for me so I’m actually pretty pleased with P5 because at some points it was looking like we may not even be through to Q3.”
