When Mercedes lost out to Red Bull in 2021, they were expecting to get back at the Milton Keynes outfit with the new regulations. But since their dominance was over, there’s been no easy way back for Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton. The zero-pod design started the butterfly effect which led to Mercedes’ current state. Toto Wolff went as far as to say that “whatever we did to it was horrible” after the Brazilian GP fiasco which saw Hamilton finish in P8 and Russell fail to cross the checkered flag.

It’s funny that when Mercedes and Toto Wolff were on their A-Game, the world credited the team for Hamilton’s titles. And now that the team is struggling, the world has turned against them once again. At least it’s safe to say that what goes around comes around, even if it is ‘miserable’ for Toto Wolff and Co. And now the Mercedes boss finds himself amidst rumors of a possible exit from the team he’s led to the top for a decade.

Will Toto Wolff ‘set everything right’?

Amidst the rumors, tensions are rising within the four walls of the Brackley outfit, but a prominent F1 journalist might have come to Wolff’s rescue. Speaking on the Unlapped Podcast alongside Katie George, Laurence Edmonson said, “I am being fairly kind to them, but there are a few journalists I’ve heard who have been pretty brutal about what they’ve done this year and the lack of results.”

The F1 editor for ESPN held back on calling out Wolff and Mercedes’ troubles. But other media outlets weren’t so kind to the Austrian. Some went as far as to claim Wolff was crumbling under the pressure. Edmondson elaborated, “And also a few people questioning Toto Wolff on whether he’s committed to Mercedes and wants to remain their long term and set everything right.”

Being close to credible sources himself, Edmondson put the Wolff rumors aside, claiming that he had heard that Wolff intended to turn things around. “Everything I have heard is that he does. But you know the fact that those questions are being asked that they haven’t scored results to the point that those questions can be asked. It’s really not where that team should be”

Whilst Edmondson denied Wolff’s exit plans, he issued a subtle warning about Mercedes’ current position on the grid and the fact that the once-dominant force should not have reached a level where the team boss would be subject to such questions. However, the next race in Las Vegas poses a serious threat to Mercedes’ confidence as a team.

Will the Las Vegas GP be the last nail in the Mercedes coffin?

After an unforgettable weekend of action-packed racing, the F1 circus arrives at its penultimate destination of the year. Hopes are high among both fans and the celebrity world to deliver a fantastic weekend of entertainment. However, the teams aren’t so eager about the challenges they will have to overcome. And it is proving especially difficult for Lewis Hamilton’s garage.

The Mercedes Head of Trackside Performance, Riccardo Musconi, was quoted by GP blog, speaking on the upcoming hurdles that the Las Vegas Street circuit poses, “It’s a completely new ball game. We have tried to gather as much information as I am sure every other team has tried to.”

With Formula 1’s return to the Sagebrush State, which means snowy in Spanish, it is looking to live up to its name tenfold. Musconi added, “The weather is going to play a big part too. It is quite cold at this time of the year in Vegas, especially the sessions happening around midnight.”

With temperatures nearing an all-time low, Musconi believes it’s not just Mercedes that will struggle to heat the tires up. “We will have the softest selection of tires in Vegas. That adds an extra dimension to the problem. The truth is every team to some degree will venture into the unknown because we don’t have any previous data.”
