Following our favorite stars on different social media platforms is always entertaining. Be it Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), or even Threads. These profiles offer unique insights about these superstars that we wouldn’t otherwise have. Some drivers like Lewis Hamilton even use their profiles to advocate for impactful causes or brands they believe could make a difference. However, there is one person in the paddock who, despite having a huge following, does not have a single social media account. Toto Wolff.

Owing to Drive to Survive and its aftermath, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has become a huge fan favorite and is well known for his obsession with pumpernickel. Despite the huge demand from fans to see him on social media, the Austrian refuses to budge. But what’s stopping him?

After the end of the 2023 season, the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team put together an end-of-the-year review video with Toto Wolff. They took a unique approach to the video, where they did the year review by answering several fan questions along the way. The fans had many interesting questions, including the secret sauce key to Mercedes’ success. But among all of them, there was one burning question.

Why does Toto Wolff shy away from having social media profiles? Does he at least have an alias where he follows what he likes on these different platforms? The Austrian Team Principal answered with an emphatic no. “I think for me, having official Instagram channels or Twitter would be super distracting. I am also an emotional person, so that would be really not beneficial if I were to post things.” Staying true to his job, Wolff revealed how dabbling with social media accounts wouldn’t be the best for him.

I also believe that as a team principal, I’m running an F1 team. I don’t believe that having an Instagram profile makes any sense. I’m not keen in taking selfies of myself and posing for the camera. Sports people or entertainment stars need to do that because it’s their profile. But no, these channels are not for me,” concluded Wolff. However, while this may upset his fans, this won’t stop him from giving us insights into who he is, owing to different interviews, Drive to Survive, or even Mercedes’ YouTube page.

The F1 paddock is filled with people with different beliefs. While there are Toto Wolffs and Max Verstappens who shy away from screens and cameras whenever they can, there are also the George Russells and Esteban Ocons who can’t get enough of social media.

Esteban Ocon’s obsession with Instagram and Threads

While Toto Wolff refuses to join and engage in social media platforms, Alpine star Esteban Ocon is the exact opposite of his manager. At least now in the off-season. After F1 drew the curtains on the 2023 season, Esteban Ocon took to social media to publicly announce his latest obsession: Threads and Instagram.

In fact, he took it one step further. He jokingly blamed Mark Zuckerberg for a significant increase in his screen time. “@zuck, I blame you for my increase in screen time,” he announced on threads.

However, as Toto Wolff mentioned, social media is different for F1 drivers, sportspeople, and entertainment figures. A significant portion of their earnings comes from sponsorship deals and the fact that they have a brand to advertise. Whether they like it or not, it might be imperative for them to maintain activity on these social media platforms.
