There is absolutely no feeling worse than giving it your all and still coming up short. The Singapore Grand Prix is arguably the most demanding race on the F1 calendar, and it saps just about everything from you. George Russell, despite all the odds stacked against him, kept his nerve all throughout the race. Finally, when the racing gods had seen enough, they gave him his golden opportunity to win again. But alas, fate had a cruel twist in the tale waiting for him. It all happened on the very last lap of the race.

After a late VSC, Russell was in pole position on fresh mediums to catch Carlos Sainz Jr. for the win. However, with his teammate, Lewis Hamilton not doing him any favors by pushing him to the limit, the Brit finally broke on the very last lap of the Singapore GP, whilst battling with 2nd placed Lando Norris, and had a sorry meeting with the barriers of the Marina Bay Circuit.

The George Russell crash was witnessed by millions of fans. But no one would’ve felt that impact more than the Brit himself. He was visibly devastated on the team radio right after his accident, yet the emotions really oozed out of him as the chequered flag fell and Sainz, Norris, and Hamilton, all celebrated their glory.

According to Sky Sports F1’s Ted Kravitz, Russell was inconsolable in the aftermath of his last-lap retirement at the Singapore GP. To hide the fact that he was “crying his eyes out”, the Brit donned a pair of sunglasses. But Kravitz was quick to reveal the self-deprecating state that Russell found himself in.

According to him, Russell lamented, “What am I? a f***ing rookie?”

In all probability, the incessant pressure that Hamilton was putting on Russell during the last few laps of the race as he chased Norris and Sainz down was the reason that Russell crashed out of the event.
