Lewis Hamilton has left Mercedes in a precarious situation with his decision to leave the team and join Ferrari in 2025. For one, Mercedes is not at its best at the moment and they needed Hamilton more than ever to take back the constructors’ throne from Red Bull. And for another, if there’s anyone best suited to go up against Max Verstappen right now, it’s also Lewis. However, Mercedes is now left to its own devices, not only to improve their car. But also to find a replacement who can fill Hamilton’s big shoes. And while there will be a lot of speculations until Mercedes actually signs someone for 2025, who better to replace the 7-time world champion than Sebastian Vettel, a 4-time world champion himself?
When Sebastian Vettel announced he would retire at the end of 2022, it was a big shock to the world of F1. After all, at 35, he still had quite a few more years of fight left in him. Although he might not have had much of a choice with the lack of a competitive car back then, with a spot open at Mercedes, Ex F1 boss, Eddie Jordan believes that Vettel might be the best choice for Mercedes to replace Lewis Hamilton.

Last year in September Sky Sports F1 spoke to Sebastian Vettel and asked him if he would consider coming back to F1. Unsurprisingly, he didn’t rule out the possibility of a return. However, according to Vettel, if he were to return, a few things would have to align. Like the timing of the return and if the opportunity allowed him to fight at the front of the grid. So it seems like a return with Mercedes might just be on the cards for the German.
In the recent episode of the ‘Formula For Success’ podcast, Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard exchanged ideas about the possible replacement for Hamilton. Eddie Jordan explained, “I have to say in the short term, I would look at Vettel because we know these cars are not as difficult to drive as in your day and my day when you needed a neck the size of a wine barrel. And that’s why you have the longevity. I think Vettel has to be in the frame, because of the German contact. We know what happened with Michael [Schumacher] before. He left Ferrari, where did he go to, back to Mercedes, so that’s a possibility.“
David Coulthard seconded his opinion by adding, “Vettel at Nurburgring last year… where we drove a couple of the old Red Bulls, the V8s. And he was very much of the conversation that he’s not closed to racing again and that he still felt in a way there was unfinished business for him in Formula 1.“
Although Vettel is not racing in F1 right now, the news of Lewis Hamilton leaving Mercedes surely must have piqued his curiosity.
