What makes someone a GOAT (Greatest of All Time) in Formula 1? Is it just about the number of races won? Is it about the number of championships? Is it about driving to the limit at all times? Well, the correct answer should be a mix of all these factors. But what’s for sure is that it’s a debate in the F1 community that might never be settled. Different people from different eras in Formula 1 will always have their own answer to who is the GOAT. However, in a recent interview, Giancarlo Fisichella opened up on what would make Lewis Hamilton the greatest of all time.
Whenever the GOAT debate comes up in F1 circles, it’s always kind of the same suspects who are touted to be the ones. Aryton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, etc. (what’s stupidly interesting is that Max Verstappen has also become a part of this debate considering he’s just 26). If you go by statistics alone, Lewis Hamilton is miles ahead of everyone else in many categories. However, according to Fisichella, there’s one thing that’s stopping Hamilton from being the outright winner.

Lewis Hamilton dropped one of the biggest shocks of the year with his move to switch to Ferrari in 2025. Many believed that he would end his career with Mercedes considering that team gave him 6 of his 7 championships (and almost his 8th as well). However, Mercedes slipped down the competitive order as the new ground effect era began in 2022.
With 2 years behind in the development race, experts believe it would be almost impossible for Mercedes to catch up to Red Bull. However, Ferrari had shown in the last few races in 2023 that they had found the right direction as they were just as quick and sometimes even quicker than the Red Bulls. And that might have been all the convincing Hamilton needed to switch to Ferrari in his pursuit of glory.

In a recent exclusive with OLBG, Giancarlo Fisichella was asked if an eighth title would make Hamilton the greatest driver ever. “Lewis Hamilton winning an eighth world title would make him the greatest driver of all time until someone else wins more titles than him!“ he responded. “I would say that an eighth world title would put Hamilton above the likes of Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna.”
Fisichella, who admires Schumacher and Senna, sees Hamilton as being on the same level with these legends, while also acknowledging the potential of drivers like Max Verstappen to reach similar heights in the future.
