No one could’ve imagined Mercedes falling further back than it did in 2022. Learning from the 2022 season, the Mercedes team developed W14 with renewed hope and high expectations. However, with the Bahrain GP as proof, the team has fallen down in the pecking order. This unwanted scenario coupled with the exiting contract of Lewis Hamilton is a concerning aspect for the boss. However, Toto Wolff has revealed his intentions to do anything possible to bring improvements and hold Hamilton down with the team.

The seven-time world champion crossed the chequered flag fifth in Bahrain. Fifth in the race thanks to Ferrari’s unreliability is not where Mercedes wants to place itself. If Mercedes can’t provide Hamilton with a competitive car, the Brit might not want to renew his contract. However, Wolff is going to do everything in his power to hold Hamilton down and also get him his eighth title.

As quoted by The Guardian, Wolff is not ready to throw in the towel and let Hamilton leave. “It would be much too easy to lose a driver and then throw in the towel, and we are not doing that,” he said. “On the contrary we need to really dig deep, deeper than we have ever done and provide both drivers with a car they can actually fight with. Lewis is an integral part of the team, picking the team up and we are speaking together- that relationship holds.”

Wolff is ready to do everything in his power to get back in the fight and the further up the grid. However, the optimistic boss is also realistic about where they stand currently.

The boss is trying to get the car competitive and get back on top of the grid. However, Wolff is not oblivious of the team’s current situation and is aware of the mountainous climb.

“I am not bulls**tting myself and I am not bulls**tting you,” he said. “As a matter of fact the gap is very big and in order to catch up we need to make big steps. This is a matter of serious performance that we need to find to put us back into a situation to fight for race wins and the championship.”
