Mercedes claimed their record-breaking seventh consecutive constructors’ championship last season. The Brackley team has dominated the hybrid era and have claimed every constructors and drivers’ championship since 2014.
Mercedes suffered from a problem of finding speed in the slow corners. The team has been working since 2017 to eradicate the weakness. Since then, the care is more reliable, well balanced, the engine has been excellent and aerodynamics platforms have positively increased.
Mercedes were very dominant this season and well ahead of the rest of the grid all season. Thus, the team’s technical director, James Allison, explains the Silver Arrows’ road to almost becoming the perfect racing car.

“More downforce, more power, a little better balanced between a lap and the race distance,” Alison on Mercedes W11 when compared with the 2019 W10.
Usually, a Formula 1 season lasts for 35 weeks. However, the 2020 season lasted only for 28 weeks and the teams lost seven weeks of development work on their cars. As a result, the team had less time this season to work on their developments.
“Our last aerodynamic development was completed in mid-July, one and a half months earlier than usual. The last upgrade came to the car in Spa. It was more for the same. We brought a total of three upgrades. In Austria, Silverstone and the smallest in Spa,” explained the Brackley team’s technical director.

Mercedes finished the 2020 season at the top of the table with 573 points. This is a 254 points difference to their closest competition, Red Bull. The significant point-difference is a testament to the development of their cars over the last few years.
“We are very happy with the mechanical platform. She puts the tires in the window where they work best in most races. The car is reliable. The engine is excellent. The car is well balanced. The aerodynamics go well with the mechanics. That’s a good foundation,” explained Allison.

Mercedes have found more downforce, and that has helped their cause immensely. The simulators have been helping with understanding suspension improvements. Moreover, the Brackley team has managed to better stabilize the chassis, allowing them to optimize the car.
Hopefully, the team’s development will help add another title to their record-breaking run this year.
