Thankfully, the next day was the Sprint race and not the main race. If this was any other weekend, the Brackley outfit could’ve been in real trouble. And the Sprint race’s addition to the weekend gave them breathing space ahead of the race.

Now, Mike Elliott, technical director for the team has explained how the car was recovered for FP2 the next day. He revealed, “Well, I think you probably saw we managed to get George out about 5 minutes into FP2. And with Lewis…amount of work went into getting those cars ready.”

“And in Lewis’s case, he had done so much damage to the chassis, actually only cosmetic damage, but damage we couldn’t fix in the field. We had to sort of build his car from scratch on Saturday morning.”

So, the W13 that Lewis drove to podium places in the race was practically a new car.

Kudos to Mercedes mechanics for getting Lewis Hamilton out for FP2

Elliott next explained the rules behind the rebuilding of cars. Giving a direct example, he told, what was allowed in the garage and what wasn’t, “A number of years ago, we used to be allowed to have a T car, a complete third car build in the garage. But the rules were changed so that you can only have two race cars…”
