As far as we can remember, Lewis Hamilton has always been in the headlines. From his debut year until now, 16 years later, Hamilton is still one of the most talked about drivers on the grid. However, the headlines are not always positive, as Hamilton gets his fair share of criticism.

The Mercedes man is facing a lot of harsh criticism, mainly due to his poor start to the season. The new generation chassis has become prone to proposing, and Hamilton’s performances took a hit because of it. A host of F1 entities spoke up and suggested Hamilton to retire, that was until his W13 and performances improved.

The Mercedes man has finished on the podium in the last three races and will start his 300th from the second row. And Toto Wolff, the Mercedes boss, has pointed out how he was actively taking part in shielding Hamilton from the criticism.

Wolff revealed, “I need to protect him because people have started to hit out at him, which is not right. It’s complete nonsense: he’s the greatest driver of all time. The car is just sub-par.”

“He could have scored another two podiums and then the pendulum would have swung. So, it [the apology] is to make sure that everybody comprehends that the car is not performing, and not that the driver is at fault,” he added.

The boss blames the ‘sub-par’ car for the poor performances while reminding the world of Hamilton’s quality. Wolff obviously keeps Hamilton in the highest regard as he is one of the greatest of all time. And accepted responsibility for not providing him a car worthy of a championship fight for the 2022 season.

Wolff still believes Hamilton should’ve won his eighth championship in Abu Dhabi last year. However, he knows they have not provided Hamilton with the machinery to battle for the eighth in the current season.

However, Wolff has now taken the responsibility upon himself. He said, “But now we need to make a car that puts him in the position of going for that eighth title and that is fundamentally my responsibility. But that’s good. I’m in control of that situation.”
