In the dynamics of F1, where speed & innovation drive success, the tiniest of glitches can make or break a team’s fortunes. The ’22 season marked a seismic shift in F1 regulations, aimed at injecting more thrill and competition into the sport. Among the many stories that unfolded during this dramatic year, one that stood out was Mercedes’ unexpected tumble from 8-time consecutive constructors’ champions to clinching a single win, and the recent Belgian GP was no exception. Yet, what truly emerged as an unforeseen nemesis for the team was the peculiar phenomenon of “porpoising,” a term that had both Lewis Hamilton and an ex-Ferrari manager raising eyebrows and voicing concerns.
The ’23 season has been a rollercoaster for Mercedes. With optimism on the rise due to the gradual improvement of their form, both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were gearing up for a strong year. However, their aspirations took a hit as the enigmatic issue of “porpoising” emerged again. Despite their efforts to address the issue, they were still behind. Porpoising is the unsettling bouncing of the car – a phenomenon that can destabilize the vehicle and compromise its performance. At the 2023 Belgian GP, the porpoising problem once again took center stage, casting a shadow over Lewis Hamilton’s pursuit of the podium, leaving fans and experts intrigued and concerned.

Amid the challenges, a familiar voice emerged – that of Peter Windsor. Reflecting on a live F1 chat, Windsor dissected the situation with a discerning eye. He pointed out an intriguing statement from Mercedes’ Mike Elliott, who expressed hopes that the porpoising issue was circuit-specific or related to the setup. Although, ex-Ferrari manager Windsor shed light on the worry for the Silver Arrows.
Windsor says, “While it’s a setup thing it’s a bit of a worry isn’t it because you know shouldn’t happen, and of course the excuses up and down the pit Lane not necessarily at Mercedes just oh well you know no dry running we couldn’t really get the car set up correctly.”
As the F1 season hurtles forward, the porpoising issue remains a tantalizing puzzle, a Gordian knot that Mercedes strives to untangle. Yet, beneath the veneer of disappointments, Hamilton’s unwavering optimism continues to shine as he reflects on his aspirations for the remainder of the year.
Lewis Hamilton’s glimmer of hope amidst disappointments
Despite this uphill battle, Hamilton’s steely determination remained resolute. In a candid reflection after securing his 104th pole position in Budapest, Hamilton shed light on his perspective. Acknowledging the dominance of Red Bull and the sheer pace of Max Verstappen, he confessed that currently, it’s a challenge to compete with them on race pace. The margin between the two teams had sometimes stretched to a daunting eight-tenths of a second per lap, a chasm difficult to bridge.
