2007 was the year when Ferrari last won a championship of any sort. That was the year when Kimi Raikkonen won the Drivers’ Championship. Since then, Fernando Alonso came tantalizingly close to winning a couple of times but was beaten to it by Sebastian Vettel. Frederic Vasseur was put in the driving seat last year to rejuvenate the Ferrari that everyone knows. And has already made a huge impact by signing arguably the best driver in the world, Lewis Hamilton. And now, Toto Wolff and Co. face another major loss.
Frederic Vasseur has been on a roll ever since he arrived at Ferrari, restructuring the team and signing engineers from the other top teams. After signing Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes, Vasseur now eyes the brains of the Brackley-based stable. Ricciardo Musconi, Mercedes’ Head of Trackside Performance, is now reported to have signed for Ferrari as well.

Gazzetta.it explains how Loic Serra, responsible for the vehicle dynamics at Mercedes, is also making a move to Ferrari alongside Lewis Hamilton. And joining him will be Ricciardo Musconi. Musconi has previously worked with Hamilton as his performance engineer and subsequently with Valtteri Bottas and George Russell as their race engineer. The news of Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari came as a shock to Toto Wolff. The Austrian suggested that the timing of his decision was the reason behind the shock. Lewis Hamilton personally met with Wolff to make sure that the CEO got to hear it from him in person. While Toto Wolff accepted Lewis Hamilton’s decision to move ships, he refused to elaborate on why the 7X champ made that decision.
While addressing the Media about Lewis Hamilton’s departure, Toto Wolff said, “I only know that we were very aligned when we went into the Christmas period [in] what we said in public and in the team. You need to ask Lewis why he changed his mind. How he framed it to me is perfectly understandable – he needed a new challenge, that he was looking for a different environment, and that it was maybe the last possibility to do something else.”
