The Mercedes nightmare continues. And now a new demon for them is resurrected in the form of Fernando Alonso in his “lovely car” Aston Martin. The shiny green team left the world awestruck when it placed itself as the second-fastest car at the conclusion of the Bahrain Grand Prix. However, the threat of the Spaniard which was still to come to fruition pushed an eight-time champion team like Mercedes to take a strategy call that didn’t materialize in their favor. However, the team which according to Lewis Hamilton didn’t accept their construction blunder has accepted the one they made on the track.
A race debrief has become a part of Mercedes tradition now. Though it has lately only been talk of shame, the team nevertheless still shows up to own up to the shortcomings. Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin answered the question which had intrigued the Silver Arrows fans as to why was Lewis pitted when he said his tires are good. What was the strategy? He clarified that the said question points to the second and final stop of the race. And the reason for the stop, despite the tires being good, was that they aimed at an undercut against the growing threat of Alonso.

He said, “Well this was the second stop that final stop and the reason we brought him in was because Alonso was about two seconds behind us he was closing slightly that put him very much within undercut range and it was just a stop to make sure we could keep that position so we would have liked to have threat.”
He further added, “Now as it happens Alonso was in a quicker car he was actually able to pass on track anyway and if we’d known that we maybe it would have accepted that we were going to lose that position and we’d have gone longer with Lewis maybe having a slightly better chance against Sainz but on the information that we had at the time it was the only way to save that position.”
But in want of trying to avoid Alonso, the team couldn’t even triumph over Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari. However, the Silver Arrows have accepted that the shiny green team has done a commendable job.
Fernando Alonso’s new team applauded by ex-teammate Lewis Hamilton
There have been thousands of replays of Alonso’s masterclass overtake on Hamilton. A repeat of an iconic rivalry that began during the first year of Lewis’s career when he partnered with Alonso at McLaren left the world nostalgic. Though Lewis got left behind in the race, he didn’t shy away from appreciating the Silverstone-based team and at the same time rue over his own.
