There’s often a side to our favorite racers that often remains hidden behind the roaring engines and the stiff competition of Formula 1. Recently, Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren, peeled back the curtain, revealing an amusing untold tale from the Netflix crossover event, the inaugural Netflix Cup. The revelation, made on the ‘Track Limits’ podcast, took an unexpected turn as Brown playfully took a jab at McLaren’s rising star, Lando Norris.
Despite Norris claiming a newfound addiction to golf, Brown trashed his skills on the course with a humorous twist. The McLaren CEO shared a story where he achieved an eagle while playing with professional golfer Justin Rose and his star driver, Lando Norris. Surprisingly, Netflix chose not to release the clip, adding an element of mystery to the competitive camaraderie between Formula 1 and PGA Tour stars at the Netflix Cup.

Just a few years ago, Norris dismissed golf as “the most boring thing ever.” Still, a persuasive invite from former teammate Carlos Sainz changed his perspective, and now, he can’t get enough of it and is addicted to golf. This evolving passion for golf mirrors his growth on the racetrack, with his Handicap Index dropping alongside his increasing skills behind the wheel.
The recent crossover event between Formula 1 and PGA Tour stars marked a groundbreaking venture for Netflix, bringing big names from both worlds together at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas for the Netflix Cup. The live event, designed for fun rather than intense competition, showcased the lighter side of these athletes, far removed from the seriousness of a conventional golf tournament.

When asked to share a funny moment with Lando Norris, Brown couldn’t resist poking fun at Lando Norris’s golf skills, asserting that despite Norris’s claims, he isn’t superior on the golf course. “Funniest moment with Lando Norris… I’ve had a lot of lot of funny moments with Lando… He thinks he’s better than me at golf… he’s not… We were golfing, and Netflix was there, but they actually didn’t show up. But they sent me the clip afterward, and we were playing with Justin Rose, the professional golfer, and [I] got an eagle, and they didn’t put it in the show.”
Beyond the laughs and banter on the golf course, Zak Brown’s appearance on the Track Limits podcast also delved into the serious side of McLaren’s Formula 1 lineup.
The dynamic duo: Norris and Piastri set to dominate in 2024
The McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri is gaining attention as a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming 2024 season. Despite Piastri being a rookie, he showcased an impressive performance in the 2023 season, leveling the playing field for McLaren. Brown passionately endorsed the idea that Norris and Piastri might just be the most formidable pairing in the upcoming seasons.
In Brown’s own words, “I think Oscar’s keeping Lando on his toes. I think the benefit is they like a very similar race car. So we are getting consistent feedback from the two.” The McLaren CEO highlighted how Piastri’s arrival has spurred Norris to up his game, especially after Daniel Ricciardo struggled to match the Briton’s performance for two seasons. The similarities between Norris and Piastri, both fast and technically adept, provide McLaren with a strong foundation for the future.
