It’s common for team principals to go to great lengths to secure top-driving talent. However, Christian Horner is drawing a line in the sand. Amidst a season rife with contract drama, poaching attempts, and drivers switching teams, Horner stands firm in his stance to not engage in what he considers “cheap tactics,” as exercised by Zak Brown. The battleground? The potential recruitment of Lando Norris, who has been making waves. But as rumors swirled and speculations ran wild, it was Christian Horner who refused to engage in what he deemed tactics in the pursuit of Norris’s services.

The 23 F1 season has been a rollercoaster in terms of driver contracts and movements. That’s when Oscar Piastri’s name came into play, and the young driver was initially announced as Alpine’s 2023 driver. However, a twist of fate saw Piastri disavowing this announcement, setting off a chain reaction of events. Last year, Zak Brown was involved in a high-profile case concerning the contract of Oscar Piastri, an Alpine reserve driver who eventually signed with McLaren after a ruling from the CRB. This was a decisive win for McLaren but also positioned Brown as willing to venture into contentious contractual landscapes to gain an edge.

While Helmut Marko, didn’t rule out the possibility of poaching Norris in the future, Horner’s response to this has been clear-cut. “Lando is a great driver, there’s no doubt about that, and you can see his potential is growing. But he’s a McLaren driver, you have to respect the agreements that are in place,” said Horner. In saying this, Horner shows that, for him, honoring existing contracts and displaying professional integrity trump the chance to destabilize the McLaren team by targeting one of its drivers.

Christian Horner’s stand raises some broader questions about how far teams should or should not go to secure driving talent in F1. It also reveals a schism in philosophies between team leaders like Horner, who opt for a more traditionalist, respect-based approach, and those like Zak Brown, who take a more aggressive stance, but Andrea Stella has offered his insights into the matter.

“It’s natural,” Stella told Corriere della Sera, “What we want to do is prevent that from happening to us.” Stella aims to keep Norris and Piastri by giving them a competitive car, outlining a timeline focused on regular podiums by next year and victories by 2025.
