Occupation of the 2nd Red Bull seat is one of the most unpredictable things in F1. No one knows when the management will vacate it and replace the current driver with an upgraded version. Recently, there has been a lot of chatter about Lando Norris driving alongside Max Verstappen in the near future. Even Helmut Marko approved of this driver pairing. But now, Team Principal Christian Horner has given a rather vague comment on this speculative move.

A few days ago, the McLaren ace expressed that he would be open to driving alongside the Dutchman. Even Verstappen didn’t seem as opposed to the idea. But the hurdle was Norris’ long-term contract with the Woking outfit. For 2024, at least, he is bound to McLaren and so is Sergio Perez to Red Bull. But 2025, the 2nd RB seat opens up and the young Briton could choose to terminate his contract early to join the Milton-Keynes outfit. Christian Horner has hinted at that possibility, calling Norris a great driver but not given a concrete ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on the subject.

“He’s doing a great job in the sport and of course we have our drivers confirmed for ’24,” said Horner, at Monza. In ’25, we have one seat open and as you can imagine, there’s not a shortage of interest in that seat but it’s a long way away at the moment.

This is one of the responsibilities that comes with being a Team Principal – keeping classified information, if any, away from the media. Naturally, vagueness acts as a good shield for deflection. While Horner’s given an unclear answer, a former World Champion has given a definite one.
