With the 2023 Italian GP as proof, Oscar Piastri is slowly and gradually living up to his hype. The rookie out-qualified his teammate Lando Norris for the first time. He could’ve taken another step in the right direction with a better race result than Norris. However, it was a one-step forward two steps back kind of scenario for Piastri in the race. This is why the young Australian refused to recognize the Italian GP as a successful weekend.

The McLaren rookie went seventh fastest in the qualifying, putting his MCL60 two places ahead of his more experienced teammate. However, in the race, Norris successfully undercut Piastri by pitting early. Although the success of the undercut came at Piastri’s cost. As soon as Piastri came out of the pits, he met his teammate who selfishly did not leave him enough space, forcing contact between the two. The damage-free collision was the beginning of the downfall of Piastri’s race.

This is exactly why, as seen on X, when asked if Piastri has “arrived in F1”, he had a bleak reply after finishing in 12th. Piastri said, “I don’t know if it’s my arrival in F1 weekend, it certainly doesn’t feel like it now!”

Although he did have some positives to take away from the race. He said, “It’s been a good weekend on the whole, I think for myself. Qualifying was quite good. The race started well and then went a bit downhill from there. But no, I feel like my pace this weekend’s been quite good.“

Now it seems, Piastri is geared up to exact revenge on his teammate. However, for Norris, it was just a normal day in the office.

Lando Norris plays down his brutal race-ruining move on Oscar Piastri

Norris tried to get ahead of Piastri with two moves. Norris radioed his team to force team orders, as he felt he was faster than his rookie teammate. The undercut came after the radio did not work. The contact after the undercut then effectively ruined Piastri’s race. However, because no cars sustained any damage, Norris downplayed the entire scenario.

Norris said, “We respect each other. We give each other space and it’s unfortunate but nothing happened, so it’s OK.” However, team boss Andrea Stella did not see it like that. The McLaren TP reprimanded the two for their mid-race contact.

He said, “There should never ever be contact between two McLaren cars. Which doesn’t fit the go racing at McLaren.”
