Lewis Hamilton, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. What do all these drivers have in common? They are constantly up there in the debate of who the Greatest F1 driver of all time is. When comparing across different eras, it is always difficult to put just one name at the top regardless of which sport it is. It is quite common for different people to have differing opinions.

Each of these drivers definitely deserves to be up there as being the best driver of all time, but, at the end of the day, the answer to that question is subjective. McLaren’s director of Ops and logistics Mark Norris has his own opinion that Lewis Hamilton is indeed the Greatest of All Time.

Lewis Hamilton’s career is well documented. Through his early ages in the Formula European Championship, F3, and F2 days he has been a part of the McLaren academy. As a direct result, now the Director of Ops Mark Norris is well acquainted with the seven-time world champion. Having witnessed his drive up close and personal, he opines that Lewis Hamilton is the definite Greatest Driver of All time.

Speaking on the Track Limits podcast on this subject he says “I’ve known Lewis since he was 8 years old when he joined the McLaren academy. I’ve followed him through his career, Formula European, F3 and F2.” He still remembers the day Lewis Hamilton was announced for the McLaren drive, “when he got the drive in Monza.”

The tipping point for Mark Norris to choose Hamilton over the others is the sheer number of championships the Briton has won over the years.  “To win the championships seven times – what a guy!”

Despite not being able to beat Michael Schumacher’s record, there’s an aura about Lewis Hamilton’s performances that for some he is the definitive GOAT. However, as mentioned earlier, even people who’ve been integral in the sport across generations cannot agree on who the single greatest driver of all time is.

Now, especially after 2023’s domination, a new name has entered the mix. Max Verstappen.

Is there an argument to be made for Max Verstappen to be called the GOAT?

Bernie Ecclestone believes so. The former CEO of the F1 group has worked closely with most of the drivers in the GOAT conversation. He has worked closely with Niki Lauda, Jackie Stewart, Alain Prost, and Michael Schumacher, all legends of the sport.

Despite this, he believes that Max Verstappen is the single greatest driver of all time to ever have driven in F1. In his own words, “Max Verstappen is the best driver to have driven in Formula 1 since the founding of the sport.”

He used to rate Alain Prost as the greatest driver before Max Verstappen unleashed himself into the beast that he has turned out to be. “Max is the best driver ever. No doubts. I used to say, Alain Prost. Now I would say it’s Max.”
