After the recent Italian Grand Prix clash, principal Andrea Stella confirmed McLaren’s Norris and Piastri can race against each other. But there’s a catch. Stella stressed this freedom comes with the caveat of maintaining “a clear perimeter” on the circuit.

During the pivotal moments of the race at Monza, an on-track skirmish ensued post-pit stop when Piastri came into contact with Norris through the first chicane. The clash saw Norris’ MCL60 receive a significant hit on its right-rear wheel. Thankfully, it resulted in no severe damage to either of the McLaren cars. The incident did, however, open up a Pandora’s box of discussions about intra-team dynamics and the extent to which teammates should compete against one another.

Stella remarked (as per a tweet by @TheMcLarenZone) that the unyielding dueling witnessed “My role is to give them principles and a clear perimeter within which they can race. This is what we want to see. In terms of how you stay within the perimeter, it’s not for us to say because we are not the drivers,” emphasizing that McLaren cars should ideally not engage in contact while racing. Stella finds himself grappling with the aggressive driving antics of his racers, dictating a fine line between promoting spirited racing and maintaining team decorum.

He emphasized that McLaren drivers are responsible for utilizing their own expertise and judgment to ensure safe and strategic racing, always considering the team’s broader goals. Stella views the recent incident as a valuable lesson in the continuous learning journey for both himself and the drivers.

Currently occupying the fifth position in the standings, McLaren has demonstrated a remarkable improvement with their MCL60, evolving from battling to secure points to being a regular contender for the podium positions. Despite halting development, competition with Alpine remains fierce.

While speaking with media outlets during the Monza race weekend, Stella remarked, “The focus itself on development has stopped. We are now working on next year’s car. I think this is pretty much what has happened in every team.” Yet, he hinted that fans and competitors could anticipate a few new additions in the upcoming races owing to the “time lag between the development at the factory and the delivery of parts trackside.”
