There are a lot of reasons Kimi Raikkonen would be remembered by the F1 community. The Iceman was a fantastic driver, winning the World Championship in 2007, the last one for Ferrari. But he also gave fans a number of other reasons to miss him off the track.

He was known for his aloof nature and monosyllabic answers in interviews. One of the most infamous amongst the long list of interviews was in Brazil.

In 2006 at the Brazil GP, Kimi was missing from the presentation ceremony. The F1 TV presenter came up to him and asked him why he wasn’t at the presentation to which he replied, “I was having a sh*t”.

Marc Priestley, a former mechanic with McLaren, had previously worked with Kimi during his time at the Woking-based team. He gave further accounts of Kimi and his interactions.

He told PitStop podcast that he had been riling Kimi up that infamous weekend in Sao Paulo. Since it was the Finn’s last race for McLaren, Marc narrates how he filled Kimi’s gloves with blue dye powder. “He takes off the gloves, and he’s got bright blue hands. He looks across the garage and says “You f***ing b***ard”… He shakes Ron Dennis’ hand, Ron Dennis’ wife’s hands… And I’m like I’m gonna get sacked here“.

It is safe to say that the Iceman was not impressed; he ended up giving Marc a horrendous haircut at 2 am in the night. Priestley tells, “He burst through the door…took a pair of clippers and buzzed off my shoulder-length hair. He cuts the plug off the clippers and then throws the clippers out the window, into the snow.

Kimi Raikkonen’s Stint at McLaren

All said and done, Marc has great memories of Kimi (and other drivers he worked with) which he tells in his book ‘The Mechanic: The Secret World of the F1 Pitlane’.

Kimi started out his F1 career with Sauber in 2001. However, the Finnish driver really came to his own at McLaren. He had a 4-year career with the team, from 2002 to 2006. He was scouted and brought in on the persuasion of another Finn great, Mika Hakkinen.

At McLaren, he did very well. He achieved 2nd place in the world championship twice, in 2003 and 2005. In consonance with his persona and image around the F1 community, he had a few incidents at McLaren as well.

At the Monaco GP in 2006, when he was forced to retire due to a heat shield failure, he chose to do something unusual. He went straight down to the jetty, onto his yacht, and relaxed in his jacuzzi in his racing suit.
