The Contract Recognition Board (CRB) announced that McLaren had a valid contract with Piastri. The Australian will replace his compatriot Daniel Ricciardo in 2023 and drive for McLaren. Alpine have revealed that have accepted the decision and will not be challenging it further.
In light of all this, Jenson Button, the former World Champion, gave his insights on the situation. He revealed how he had been through this particular situation and wanted a move to another team, but ended up staying and eventually winning the World Championship. Moreover, he draws a comparison between the two scenarios.
He added, “For Oscar, it’s very different. He’s not even raced in a Formula 1 car.”
“Alpine has funded his development as a driver and now it’s like ‘You know what, I actually want to go to them because they’re better for my career’.”
“It’s a tricky situation, but you can’t make enemies this early in your career.”

He continued, “It’s put me in good stead and I’m very thankful for Alpine for the testing we have done this year, but McLaren is a different team, a different car and the 2022 cars in general are quite different beasts so we’ll see how much of that carries over.”
He concluded by saying, “I will look back on my time at Enstone with great memories but I’m now focusing on my future and starting my F1 career.”
