Woes of Woking don’t seem to subside. McLaren, which has an iconic pedigree to its history and is the second most successful team in the history of the sport, has only seen low points in the recent past barring Monza 2021. Ironically, they booted Daniel Ricciardo, who gave them their only in the past decade to bring the glory back. But alas, the 2023 campaign which has just begun has ended all their hopes to rise again. And CEO, Zak Brown, who got a tattoo of the Monza track on his arm, seems to be the center of the attack.

The curtain raiser at Bahrain saw double trouble in terms of a double DNF for the team and double lapping of the talented Lando Norris at the hands of Max Verstappen. The McLaren nightmare saw a night of respite when the Australian who was traded in place of Ricciardo, Oscar Piastri, put his car in Q3. But the first lap drama which began with Piastri and spilled over to Norris realized the nightmare the team didn’t even expect.

Lewis Hamilton is approaching the end of his career. While the man may still have some years to go, he’ll eventually have to hang his boots. And the man who is being pitted as the most suited to fill in for the 7x champ is the fellow Britton, Lando Norris. And the troubles in the orange paradise and at Silver Arrows may accelerate the process for both the men.

Jess McFadyen addressed it in a recent Sky Sports F1 podcast episode. He said, “It’s an interesting question because a lot of people were saying how Lando and Lewis’ futures might be interlinked. And maybe if Lewis retires, Lando takes his seat which is an interesting one because if we’re saying that Lewis potentially has five years, I don’t know how quickly Mercedes can turn it around to give him his eighth title because he has pretty much said he’s going to stick around until his eighth and then we’ll see, he’s got nothing else to prove in Formula One.”
