In recent weeks, McLaren has shown intent to promote young talents and, more specifically, have invested their time in Colton Herta. The American is currently driving for Andretti Autosport in the IndyCar series. He is also the youngest ever driver to win a race in the series.

Zak Brown, the McLaren CEO, was quick to identify him as a potential long-term option. With Daniel Ricciardo’s future in question, it seems they have Herta in mind to replace him. However, Brown has rubbished the rumors and revealed the Aussie will stay and backed him to perform.

With that being said, Herta was recently given the keys to drive the MCL-35. This is certainly a sign and he could become the first American driver in F1 since 2015. However, Brown was clear that the external factors do not play a part.

He also revealed that Herta’s performance ultimately matters. “We take very seriously everyone we put in our Formula 1 car. The fact that he’s American is great, but we prioritize performance,” he stated.

The IndyCar driver also impressed the McLaren team during his test drive in Portugal’s Portimao track. Furthermore, he also has experience racing in Europe during his younger days.

Speaking on his potential to drive for McLaren, Brown said, “That’s what our sponsors want. And yes, he’s been very impressive in IndyCar. He was Lando[Norris]’s teammate not so long ago in Europe, so he has experience in European racing, we want to give him a chance and see what he’s capable of.” (Translated using Google)

Daniel Ricciardo is confident in turning his McLaren career around

Struggle is one world Ricciardo can relate to, especially this season. He has only scored points in 3 races and his teammate Lando Norris has constantly outperformed him. As a result, there were rumors surrounding his future with McLaren, but he has been given a lifeline.

Despite the disappointing displays, he ultimately has the self-confidence to turn it around. Ricciardo revealed that the sport is unpredictable and cited his victory in Monza last year as an example.

Speaking to Express Sport, he revealed, ”I’m just being real – there haven’t been any strong signs [of a win] so far this year,” he said. “But I don’t think anyone would have predicted me winning a race last year. That made it a really beautiful thing because it reminded me anything is possible, especially in this sport.”
