McLaren switched to Mercedes power units for the 2021 season and will continue to work with the German manufacturer for the upcoming season as well. Zak Brown, the CEO of the Woking-based outfit has given some exciting news regarding the new power units.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the Silver Arrows produce the most dominant engines on the grid. And as the 2022 season edges closer and closer, Brown has made some optimistic statements about the power unit.

Brown gives good news regarding Mercedes power units for the 2022 season

The Brackley-based squad provides engines to Aston Martin, Williams, and McLaren on the F1 grid. Next year will also see the new generation of cars, and teams are preparing to see how the engine synchronizes with the car.

Speaking of the power units to Motorsport.com, Brown said, “They’re feeling good about their development. We fortunately had good reliability last year. As you know, there’s more than just the power unit that goes into the reliability. I think our guys did a good job of working with the power unit in year one, so reliability hasn’t been maybe the same level of concern with us that it has with others.”

I spoke with Toto [Wolff, Mercedes team boss] last week about it. And he was pretty bullish. I think the power unit race is as close as ever, but I’m not worried about it,” Brown concluded.

Where did McLaren finish in the teams’ standings?

In 2020, the Woking-based team finished in third place in the constructors’ standings. And with Daniel Ricciardo joining them for the following season, the Brown-led team was optimistic for 2021.

However, they couldn’t build on that momentum, as Lando Norris and Ricciardo managed to get a total of 275 points; resulting in them finishing fourth in standings behind arch-rivals, Ferrari.
