In a recent statement, Andrea Stella, Team Principal of McLaren, spoke of the evolving role of Lando Norris within the team. Stella’s words may suggest a changing dynamic within the team, but they also raise questions. What exactly did he mean by “not a leading position as the leading driver?”

While Stella’s words might be interpreted as placing Norris in a mentoring or guiding role within the team, this sits uneasily with other aspects of the team’s operation. McLaren has asserted that it doesn’t operate a number one/number two driver dynamic. Indicating that they treat their drivers, Norris and Oscar Piastri, with equal regard.

“Lando is definitely evolving towards more of a leading position,” Stella said as quoted by The Athletic. “Not a leading position as the leading driver, but just as a driver that kind of tries to pull the team, not only just being on the receiving end of it,” he added. However, observant fans and insiders have noted instances where this ‘equal treatment’ seems to be somewhat flexible. Notably, Norris received the first use of upgrades in Austria when only one set was available. This apparently preferential treatment would seem to run counter to the narrative that the team maintains an equal stance between its two drivers.

Of course, it is possible to argue that Norris’ prior experience and current championship standing warrant such a priority. As such, it could be reasoned that giving Norris the first use of crucial upgrades is a strategic decision based on merit and the potential for better race results rather than favoritism. Despite these arguments in defense of McLaren’s decisions, the situation calls for greater transparency. This would not only clear the air but also create a standard that Piastri, or any other future driver, could aim to meet to earn similar opportunities.

Returning to Stella’s comments, they introduce an additional layer of complexity. If Norris is “evolving towards more of a leading position,” as Stella puts it, then what does this mean for Piastri, who is seemingly his equal within the team?

The 2023 F1 season has seen a particularly riveting storyline unfold. Oscar Piastri, the young Australian, has been the standout rookie, making his mark with McLaren. After McLaren introduced substantial upgrades to their car in the Austria and Silverstone races, Piastri has been a force to be reckoned with. His performance trajectory included a fourth place at Silverstone, fifth in Budapest, and a remarkable second in the Sprint at Spa, where he also led his first laps in Formula 1.

Stella spoke with Sky Sports after the Belgian Grand Prix Sprint. Full of praise for both of his team’s drivers, he said, “We are first of all very happy to have Lando [Norris] and Oscar in our team. We think they are incredible prospects for the future.” He noted Piastri’s analytical approach, eagerness to learn, and impressive composure as standout qualities that have become evident in his initial F1 races. Importantly, Piastri’s speed and competitiveness have proven beneficial for Norris as well. Stella pointed out the impressive immediate competitiveness of Piastri, even in FP1 sessions. This intra-team competition is pushing both drivers to extract the maximum potential from their cars.
