The Japanese Grand Prix has been for the most, what people expected. Without any retired cars, Red Bull made their 1-2 finish and Carlos Sainz came in third again. This year has been good for the replaced Ferrari driver, but not so much so for Fernando Alonso. The 2-time world champion is currently 8th in the driver’s championship.
Aston Martin has been doing well lately but there have already been times when Lance Stroll does not score points for the team. This leads Fernando Alonso to make some strategic decisions of his own on track. This has famously brought about some controversy and this time, he has tried to steer clear of them.

In Australia, Fernando Alonso was given a penalty for break-checking George Russell. The Briton driver met with a nasty accident during the closing laps of the race which was blamed on Alonso. This penalty cost the Spaniard his position in the pecking order. So for the Japanese Grand Prix, he implemented a different strategy.
This time he planned on keeping George Russell away by giving Oscar Piastri a toe into DRS. Giving Piastri the lead works in Aston Martin and Alonso’s favor as this keeps George Russell tied with him in points and Mercedes is just one point away. While this was not an illegal maneuver, it might raise the eyebrows of the Stewards.
When asked, if the move was intentional, Alonso replied, “I don’t know what to say, after Australia…….Maybe they disqualify me from the Championship.”

Alonso has always been around risky territory with his bad-boy attitude on the track and this has cost him too many points over the years. This time Alonso wants to finish ahead of Mercedes and that mission is an achievable one.
Fernando Alonso’s contract ends after this season and it is still unsure if he will continue to race or retire. If he races, he would want to win the world champion title, and for that, he needs to beat Max Verstappen. However, the Dutchman is rumored to have left Red Bull at the end of the season, but Alonso has something to say about this.

Alonso seems keen on securing a seat at Red Bull for the 2025 Formula 1 season, whether it involves partnering with Max Verstappen or replacing him. Despite being F1’s dominant force at the moment, Verstappen’s future at Red Bull has been questioned due to internal team dramas and uncertainties.
Allegations against team principal Christian Horner and the potential for Verstappen to switch to Mercedes have fueled speculation. Alonso believes there is “zero chance” of Verstappen leaving Red Bull at the end of 2024. However, he has mentioned that if Max Verstappen leaves his Red Bull seat, the whole grid will be affected, including himself.
