Jos Verstappen has certainly been one of the happiest fathers in the last 2 years. His son, Max Verstappen, has dominated F1 and brought race-winning and championship-winning glory to the family. Though when someone points fingers at his son or Red Bull, he doesn’t hold back. And he did a similar thing back in 2020 about Sergio Perez.

Jos Verstappen is often present in the paddock supporting Max Verstappen over the race weekends. He is himself a former F1 veteran, who raced in 106 Grand Prix and got 2 podiums in his career. So he knows how the entire operation works at a team like Red Bull.

Thus, when F1 Journalist and Broadcaster Chris Medland tweeted regarding a driver change at Milton Keynes, Jos Verstappen slammed his claim on Twitter.

Medland had quoted Dutch journalist Erik van Haren back in December 2020 regarding the possibility of Sergio Perez signing up for Red Bull.

Medland, wrote on Twitter, “Erik [van Haren] knew where Jos was in Bahrain, and now he’s reporting Red Bull has chosen [Sergio] Perez to replace [Alex] Albon in 2021, with Albon dropping to reserve [driver]. Seems like he’s right on this one…”

To this Verstappen, Sr. replied, “Don’t state something what [sic] is not true.” Jos was maybe not aware of Perez’s talks or perhaps was avoiding talking about it before it became official from RBR.

Perez has since then spent 2 seasons on the team being teammates with Max. Although the Mexican has been mostly Max’s wingman, aiding his two title charges.

Going into next season, Checo has a multi-year deal with the Milton Keynes team until the end of 2024. But contracts in F1 arguably don’t guarantee your future, as Perez has experienced in the past at Racing Point.

Could Sergio Perez sustain his tenure at Red Bull?

With Daniel Ricciardo returning to the Austrian team as a reserve driver, there have been rumors that he might end up as teammates with Max Verstappen again. Though these might be baseless, Sergio Perez is possibly not on the best of terms with his teammate after the Brazilian GP fiasco.

Apparently, Verstappen denied Perez a P6 finish in Sao Paulo after a team-order mess-up. Both the drivers were livid over it, especially Checo, as those points might have helped him in his challenge for P2 in the championship.

While the matter is seemingly resolved, Perez might want to prove his mettle by matching Verstappen next season. The Mexican driver got 2 wins in 2022 with multiple podiums, by far his best season results-wise.

On the other hand, Max gathered 15 wins, which certainly shows how convincingly he beat Checo. But going into 2023, Sergio will want to change this and be more consistent to challenge for the title.
