As Lewis was on his way to complete his lap, the Red Bull of Verstappen almost came in contact with his Mercedes. This not only hampered the lap time for Hamilton but also released both of them at risk of a high-speed collision.

Talking about this, Verstappen asked his engineer on radio, “Was he on a lap mate?“, to which Lambiase, Max’s race engineer replied, “Hamilton was on a lap, yeah“. The Red Bull driver then resorted to “Fu**” to conclude the conversation. Lewis, on the other hand, was furious after seeing his efforts go in vain. The seven-time world champion stated, “I had a problem. The Red Bull was in the way.”

What does this close call mean for Max Verstappen?

The action by Verstappen could get him a grid penalty by the stewards, as they already have noted the incident. Moreover, another heavy crash left Williams’ Nicholas Latifi and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll out of the qualification in Q1. A miscommunication between the two left them vulnerable to contact as Lance’s front right tire hit Latifi’s left rear tire. The hit sent Latifi sliding down the circuit.
