F1 is unpredictable for several drivers and their careers. While one career move might be a masterstroke and give them loads of championships, one bad season and a world-champion driver might not win another championship ever. The reigning champion Max Verstappen may have a similar fork in the road for his career.

Former Red Bull driver David Coulthard has been a huge Max Verstappen supporter. Recently, speaking with the FORMULE1 magazine, the British driver spoke talked about how Verstappen has already registered his name in the list of the legendary drivers of F1.

Though Coulthard also mentioned how nothing is permanent in F1 and Max may not win another world championship after 2022. He said, “The Verstappen era may well be over after two titles. Not because he’s not a brilliant driver, but he may not have a title-worthy car in the coming seasons. Nobody knows that in advance.” [translated via Google]

The former McLaren driver gave an example of Lewis Hamilton and how he could have had 9 championships instead of 7, with some luck. He added, “Lewis [Hamilton], even with all he has already achieved, could have been a nine-time champion instead of a seven-time champion.”

He concluded, “Just like Max [Verstappen] doesn’t need three [titles] to be seen as one of the best. Max is already one of the greats.”

Now there is no fixed number of titles to be won before any driver is eligible to be great. And every world champion may believe he deserved more championships than he won.

Is Max Verstappen emulating the path of Other World Champions?

People have compared Max Verstappen with several multiple world champions. The Dutchman’s 2022 performances have been evidence of the fact that he may emulate one of the previous champions’ career graphs.

Max was supreme at Spa-Francorchamps this season, winning the Belgian GP from P14 on the grid. Many compared this drive to Michael Schumacher‘s 1995 drive in Belgium, winning from P16 on the grid.

While Verstappen has shown dominance and consistency like Michael, his consecutive championships are also linked with another German at Red Bull in the past. The first world champion of Milton Keynes – Sebastian Vettel had a similar dominance for Red Bull about a decade back.

Vettel won 4 consecutive titles from 2010 to 2013, and Max is halfway there in 2022. Another Red Bull prodigy asserting himself in F1 might be interesting.

Though one comparison that Verstappen would not wish to come true is with Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard also stopped the streak of a 7-time champion back in the day and won 2 successive titles. Though Fernando has been on the wrong side of championship fights since then.
