Max Verstappen to Mercedes in 2026—Is this the end of Red Bull's dominance?

Rumors, confusion, and suspense – these terms perfectly define Max Verstappen‘s alleged Mercedes move. Of course, there has been plenty of speculation, with new rumors emerging daily. However, the possibility isn’t entirely far-fetched. Why? The Dutch superstar wants a fast car that can secure his victories. Red Bull is currently facing several challenges that have impacted their performance. Additionally, Mercedes is shaping up as a strong contender this season, which could be a compelling reason to entice the 3-time champion.

But if Max truly arrives at the Brackley headquarters in 2026, then where will Kimi Antonelli go? Mercedes has promised an F1 seat in 2025 to their 17-year-old protégé, who is currently in his debut season in Formula 2. While a multi-time world champion undoubtedly carries significant weight, there are a few questions that experts in the sport are pondering. What are these questions?

If Max Verstappen goes to Mercedes in the new regulations era then what about Antonelli?

The F1 oracles Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard never skimp on their honest opinions in ongoing matters. And despite, Verstappen’s unwavering loyalty towards Red Bull, Eddie Jordan strongly feels, the Flying Dutchman could go to Mercedes in 2026. Speaking on the Formula For Success podcast on Spotify, both experts shared their thoughts. The former team boss said in response to David Coulthard’s question, “Who do you see being at Mercedes in ’26?”: “From what I’m hearing, I have to say, Max.”

Rumors suggest Toto Wolff & Co. are ready to announce Kimi Antonelli for their 2025 campaign. And as many had previously asked, is Mercedes rushing with the decision? The Silver Arrows is about to pass the legacy of Lewis Hamilton to a rookie, is that the right choice? Eddie Jordan gave his bold and piercing verdict: I think that’s a mistake. I think you’re putting incredible pressure on him. Mercedes should be fighting for a constructor’s championship whilst they still look after Antonelli.” What Jordan implies here is that Wolff could’ve kept the F2 driver as a reserve driver for a while until he’s ready for F1. Meanwhile, fighting for the constructor’s title in the upcoming season should’ve been Mercedes’ priority.

“You just don’t want that it’s not fair to give the guy, he’s not doing enough in F2 at the moment to give me the inspiration that I feel he’s ready to start winning Grand Prix or to take on the pressure at Mercedes,” Eddie Jordan further remarked. Despite being a remarkable driver, Kimi Antonelli isn’t completely F1-ready as of now. Of course, compared to the rookie, Max Verstappen is the ultimate choice. What could be better than having another multi-time world champion in the squad? But, as we know, Verstappen is going to stay at Red Bull, at least for 2025; and after that? Maybe, Mercedes could become his next destination.

Why should Mercedes pursue Max Verstappen with all its might?

What’s your perspective on:

Max Verstappen to Mercedes in 2026—Is this the end of Red Bull's dominance?

Have an interesting take?

Max Verstappen is considered the best driver of this generation, after Lewis Hamilton. He is fast and feisty (not that we don’t know!) However, why should Max Verstappen leave his power and a secured seat in Red Bull for Toto Wolff’s team? The calculation is simple- Christian Horner‘s squad is becoming slow. The Adrian Newey effect is right before our eyes. Red Bull might deny it but deep down they too would agree! The internal disruption and the tension in the squad is palpable. Moreover, Jos Verstappen himself isn’t happy with the current conditions.

Meanwhile, Mercedes is rising once again. They’ve won three races in the last four races and the team keeps getting stronger. It is believed that Max Verstappen is keeping a close watch on their progress. Moreover, as Eddie Jordan pointed out: “Mercedes certainly has an ability in the engine department and an understanding of convertibles, battery packs, and various other things. They will have a massively strong power.  I see Mercedes has been very strong in ’26 and that’s why I think people should- will rush to go there.” Looks like Max will have a myriad of reasons to swoop from the Milton Keynes HQ to the Brackley HQ. But will he truly shift?
