Is Max Verstappen's behavior ruining the spirit of F1 racing, or is he just being competitive?

Max Verstappen and his never-ending love for motorsport racing. Be it on the F1 tracks or sim tracks, his dominance never ceases. Reiterating his Imola tales, Verstappen is back with his simulator racing team. And right ahead of the 2024 Hungarian GP, the 3x World Champion will race at the iRacing 24H of Spa. For those who don’t know- iRacing is a subscription-based online racing simulation video game. This will be Max’s second time undertaking 24H sim racing this season.

The Red Bull No.1 often spends his spare time racing on sim tracks along with his sim team, Team Redline. Interestingly, Verstappen’s first virtual race was during the Imola GP earlier this year. He went on to win the 24H of Nurburgring. Fans were concerned for the defending world champion. Some even went to the extent of calling Max an ‘obsessive racer.’ Nevertheless, Max, being Max, didn’t pay much heed to the detractors.

An X handle SCUDERIAFEMBOY confirmed that Max Verstappen would be participating in the 24H of Spa. The caption read: oh so max IS racing in the 24hr of spa. girl not again😭💀.” Fans feel this is an added stress Verstappen keeps adding to himself. Some experts of the sport assumed Verstappen’s strange performance in Imola to be the ‘gift’ of sim racing ahead of the GP race. Could Hungaroring witness a repetition of Imola?

Although, Verstappen has done pretty well in the practice sessions, better compared to Imola. But the Qualifying session and the main race remain. Moreover, Max also won in Imola, after racing in the hectic sim racing event. So, if Hungaroring is meant to be a repeat telecast of the former, Verstappen will win again!

Max Verstappen’s 24H sim race ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix 2024

“It’s a lot of fun” – Max Verstappen stated after winning the 24H of Nurburgring. Any other driver in his place would’ve never taken the risk of participating in a virtual event that would end just 10 minutes before a Grand Prix race. But then, he is Max ‘the Axe’- as it seems he just might be a superhuman. He even dismissed the advice against taking part in the sim race as it could’ve been a big distraction for him. “I think I’m professional enough that I know what can and can’t be done,” he said.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Max Verstappen's behavior ruining the spirit of F1 racing, or is he just being competitive?

Have an interesting take?

The race was live on Twitch, letting fans watch Verstappen’s stints and interact with him. Verstappen’s team completed 173 laps at the virtual Nurburgring, with him doing 31. Team Redline won by 36 seconds. At the end of the virtual race, Verstappen’s team joked that they “allowed” Max to take part in the Imola race, instead of putting all of his focus on the virtual race. What people are failing to understand here is that the Dutchman is improving his skills further by participating in sim races.

Max Verstappen’s ‘win-at-all-cost’ attitude sets him apart from the rest of the grid. While some might call this ‘robotic’ or ‘obsessive’, Verstappen’s rare talent behind the steering wheel cannot be undermined. So, as the time ticks towards the Hungarian GP, iRacing 24H of Spa tails behind. The ‘Dutch Lion’ would surely steal the spotlights in both races, therefore keep your eyes on Max. Watch out for what he can do on the virtual platform before he revs up the engine of his RB20.
