Max Verstappen has given his blessing to Red Bull’s new engine project. Till 2021, it was Honda who officially supplied the engines for the Milton-Keynes-based team. But now, the Bulls have now set out to make their own power units. They have made more strides with the engine project, with Verstappen now describing it as promising.

Max winning the driver’s title was one of the best tributes Honda could’ve got before leaving the sport in 2021. However, the Japanese brand is still helping the Austrian team with their engines for 2022, while their Dutch driver is concentrating on this year’s championship. Red Bull has started the season strongly and will hope to come out on top.

Speaking of Honda’s departure, Verstappen said, “Honda will mainly be a little less visible, but fortunately not much has changed for us. I’m just looking forward to picking up where we left off last year this season. We’re still trying to get better together and they’re still working with us, so that’s good.” (quotes translated using Google Translate)

Although Honda announced their departure in October 2020,  they will keep working closely with Red Bull regarding the engines. They have set up an engine manufacturing unit for Red Bull Powertrains, which already employ over 250 personnel. However, with the upcoming engine freeze and their power loss due to the E10 fuel, it is more challenging for the Bulls than expected.

Max Verstappen is bullish on Red Bull’s prospects

Max Verstappen is happy about the progress made by Red Bull this season. The Dutch driver believes that Red Bull has to keep improving to remain top over the course of the season, and feels that the team has done everything in their power to develop the car in Bahrain testing.

He said, “I think we did everything that was possible last winter and did it the best we could. But yeah, in F1 it’s never good enough, is it? That’s why we have to keep improving ourselves and we have to keep trying to find even more performance.”

There have also been talks regarding Red Bull’s lucrative partnership with Porsche, but Verstappen failed to comment on it. Meanwhile, he is also optimistic about the newly introduced Red Bull Powertrains. He added, “The facilities for Red Bull Powertrains look very good. Of course, I also know what they are planning and which people will be working there. All in all, it looks very promising.”

Red Bull has certainly made a strong start to the season. With the introduction of Red Bull Powertrains, they will look to be self-sufficient, manufacturing their own engines. Christian Horner and Co will believe strongly that the Red Bull team will be on the up in the coming years.
