The 2021 Abu Dhabi GP win has proven to be a golden moment for Max Verstappen. On the back of that win which sealed his world championship, he has been nominated for the prestigious Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award.

Quite possibly has been the only person to challenge the legendary Lewis Hamilton so aggressively in the turbo-hybrid era after Nico Rosberg in 2016, and succeeded in snatching the world title. After years of comfort in the best car, Lewis, surprised and bewildered, had to finally settle for number 2.

For his dominant season and record-breaking podium numbers, the Dutchman was an obvious nomination. Max thanked the Award committee on Twitter and made a small video to show his gratitude. The world champion claimed to be very honored by the nomination and was thankful to the media for voting for him.

The Award ceremony has been going on for almost 22 years now. Media representatives from every sport are responsible for voting and providing the award committee with the most deserving name. Max has been nominated alongside sporting giants like Robert Lewandowski, Novak Djokovic, etc. Previously, Formula One legends Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, and Hamilton have all won the award.
While Max has been in Formula One since 2015, he finally won the championship after a long wait. Red Bull has always had faith in the 24-year old and last year he proved worthy of their praises. To beat the camp of Mercedes and the formidable Lewis is no small task. Undoubtedly, the driver has matured and carved a remarkable career for himself.
