Who could’ve thought Max Verstappen would face such a miserable race? If Verstappen were to compare a nightmare and the 2024 Hungarian GP, he would keep the latter on the top. His show in Budapest was a true horror show. More importantly, his teammate, Sergio Perez, has improved substantially. Perez jumped from P16 to P7 while Max dived from P3 to P5. The Dutchman’s Hungaroring ended on a disappointing note, and it seems nothing could’ve stopped this fate.
Amidst the debacle, many haven’t liked Verstappen’s behavior during the race. The irritation of the 3x World Champion was clear; he kept falling behind, losing pace before the McLaren duo. Moreover, Verstappen’s constant expression of anger has received considerable backlash. But, according to Leo Turrini, Max’s behavior could indicate a big team shift in 2025!
F1 pundit Leo Turrini shared his thoughts on Max Verstappen’s conduct in Budapest. He wrote in his column for Quotidiano: “From the way he’s [Max Verstappen] behaving, from the words he reserves for his technicians live on the world stage, yes, I’d be tempted to say he’s already signed for Mercedes 2025!” Turrini implies that Red Bull No.1’s attitude towards GP Lambiase [Red Bull’s team engineer] points out a possible move to Mercedes. This could be a sarcastic comment, as it looked like Max was trying to sever all ties with his current team. However, these are just assumptions or lighthearted jestering.

And while Max Verstappen chooses not to apologize to Gianpiero Lambiase or the team for foul-mouthing throughout the race. One can’t help but think, why this restlessness? Max is still leading the Championship, he is gaining points in every race. He is still feared on the track. Then why are these bouts surrounding the ‘Returns of Mad Max’?
Hungaroring exposed Max Verstappen’s hysteria to the world

Verstappen’s collision in lap 63 cannot be the only reason for his irritation. Throughout the race, Max had an attacking stance, unfortunately not on the track. Max cussed on the team radio, and at one point, even GP Lambiase seemed to lose his patience. The Hungarian GP brought out Max’s hysteria, as Sunday marked his third consecutive winless race. And it is only natural for him to fear for his No.1 spot on the Drivers Table. Lando Norris is catching up faster than the 3x champ could’ve imagined, and so is Oscar Piastri, the Ferraris, and most importantly Lewis Hamilton.
Leo Turrini also pointed out, “At Red Bull, internal brawls, from the Horner case onwards, through Adrian Newey’s dismissal, have triggered a mechanism that even makes one think of self-destruction.” Could he mean, Red Bull’s internal turmoil is costing the team on the track? Turrini’s observation might not be a random arrow thrown in the air! Meanwhile, Verstappen’s sleepless night, thanks to sim-racing, could’ve been another reason for his endless frustration yesterday.
Overall, a race to forget for Max Verstappen, his eyes reflected his hunger to win. But if he continues to be impatient, then the rest of the season could become a series of nightmares for the Dutchman and his team. Moreover, if we believe Leo Turrini’s words, we could see Max in the Brackley outfit next year!
