Only one person can stop the Dutch GP from falling out of the F1 calendar. No cookie points for guessing Max Verstappen‘s name! The flagbearer of Holland at the pinnacle of motorsport was the driving force behind bringing Zandvoort back in F1. However, with the contract ending in 2025, will the ‘Max Verstappen Effect’ be enough to convince F1 to continue in the Netherlands?
Bernie Ecclestone aka Mr. Formula 1 thinks it’s possible to retain the Dutch GP. But the primary clause here is that Verstappen has to continue in the sport. Ecclestone had been the steering wheel of F1 for over 40 years. But with US Liberty Media’s introduction in 2017, the Briton left his post. He is a huge supporter of ‘Mad Max’ and believes he’s the best driver F1 has ever seen.
Ecclestone was never fond of the Zandvoort circuit. Back in 1986, the Dutch GP was discontinued because it was a ‘mess commercially’ stated Ecclestone. Moreover, the circuit was tricky and dangerous. However, Mr. Formula 1 is happy that Zandvoort is back on the calendar. “It looks much better, the organization is doing well. It is mainly thanks to Verstappen of course, but besides that, there are plenty of people who have put their shoulders to the wheel,” he explained. Ecclestone has not yet visited the Dutch GP, but he makes a promise about that: “Next year, I’ll come.”

Bernie Ecclestone believes the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort is positively influencing other races with its focus on entertainment. While there’s no confirmation about Zandvoort’s contract beyond 2025, Ecclestone reassures, “As long as Max drives in Formula 1, Zandvoort will remain on the calendar.” Both parties (F1 and Dutch authorities) rely heavily on Max Verstappen. However, if the financial crunch persists then even Verstappen won’t be able to save his home race from eviction.
Can Max Verstappen’s influence help the Dutch GP stay on the F1 calendar?
Earlier this year, the Zandvoort circuit manager Robert van Overdijk hinted that the Dutch Grand Prix could end after 2025 due to financial challenges. The high costs and lack of government support have caused greater trouble. Although the circuit pays around 30 million euros annually and faces increased VAT, there’s hope for an extension as negotiations continue. A proposal suggests alternating the Dutch Grand Prix with Spa-Francorchamps every other year to reduce costs. However, this remains uncertain.
Despite the challenges, Robert van Overdijk remains optimistic. He’s emphasized the ongoing discussion with the F1 management to find a viable solution and potentially extend the Grand Prix’s stay on the calendar. A major responsibility is likely to fall on Max Verstappen’s shoulders. The Red Bull giant’s influence and his love of his country could play an important role in retaining the race on the calendar.
Zandvoort’s last hope is Max Verstappen’s stay in F1. Moreover, the government should come forward to help the historical circuit keep its place in the calendar. Verstappen’s Orange Army could miss out on a race to support their homeboy. Do you think Max Verstappen is the key to the Dutch GP retention? Share your thoughts in the comments.
