“UTP, could you please put your hands together and your phones down for eight-time world champion Lewis Hamilton,” said the host at the Petronas University of Technology at an event a few days ago. However, this isn’t the first time he has been called an 8x champion. In recent memory, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc have also called him an octa-champion, though they instantly corrected themselves. However, if a new trend on Twitter is to be believed, 80K fans also believe the same. But what exactly led to this pot-stirring situation?

A human error is what the FIA admitted having committed when the then race director Michael Masi gave a green light for the last lap showdown in Yas Marina. While the controversial call brought Hamilton’s world crashing down, it gave Verstappen his first title, ending almost a decade-long drought at Red Bull. However, fans are not ready to let it go. And F1 Twitter and LH fans have joined forces to help the British driver claim the 2021 title back.

As quoted by Motorsports, Massa said: “There is a rule that says that when a championship is decided, from the moment the driver receives the champion’s trophy, things can no longer be changed, even if it has been proven a theft.”

He admitted to knowing the rule but not acting on it. He said, “At the time, Ferrari’s lawyers told me about this rule. We went to other lawyers and the answer was that nothing could be done. So I logically believed in this situation.”  “[…] I would never go after it thinking financially. I would go after it thinking about justice. I think if you’ve been punished for something that wasn’t your fault, and it’s the product of a robbery, a stolen race, justice has to be served. In fact, the right situation is to cancel the result of that race. It is the only justice that can be done in a case like this.”
