Max Verstappen can’t put a foot wrong at the moment. The Dutchmen would be on Cloud 9 after winning 4 races in a row. He’d have enjoyed the latest one more than others, for obvious reasons. With that win, Max extended his lead at the top of the Drivers Championship. With a lead as comfortable as his, he can afford to take things a little lightly and joke about a thing or two.

However, one did not expect Verstappen to make a joke at his father, Jos Verstappen’s expense. In the aftermath of winning the Dutch GP, Max Verstappen and Red Bull boss Christian Horner took funny shots at each other. But it was one particular dig at Jos that caught the attention of people.

Horner said, “Great to see that helmet win a race as well. First time it’s done that. Well done”

Max joked, “My dad finally won a race (laughs).”

Max and Horner later appreciated the enormous support from his home crowd. Horner claimed that he has not seen “anything like that” in the crowd stand. Max acknowledged his comments and added that it was very orange.

Despite all the jokes, The Red Bull driver paid a fitting tribute to his father Jos in a special way for the Dutch GP. Jos Verstappen almost missed the race, but a late negative covid test meant he was present to support his son.

Max Verstappen pays ’emotional’ tribute to father Jos

Jos Verstappen would be proud of Max’s composure during the Dutch GP. But he must have been even more thrilled looking at Max’s helmet. Junior Verstappen paid his father a fitting tribute, as the design of his helmet was inspired by the helmet his father used in his F1 career.

In a video posted on driver’s twitter account, Verstappen said, “As you can see here, I have one of my dad’s old helmets next to me, and of course the Dutch Grand Prix is coming up and I thought this year would be a great time to appreciate all the efforts my dad made for me since I was a little kid, to bring me where I am today… winning the World Championship.”

He further explained how the helmet has a modern take on one of his dad’s classic helmet designs. Furthermore, he mentions how the helmet has both his father’s and his own logo.

He continued, “It’s a bit emotional as well, but I think it’s just really special to be able to drive something like this because it’s also how I started in go-karting; all the old pictures I have of go-karting is with this iconic design, so that’s why we thought it was a great idea to bring this back alive around Zandvoort.”
