Max Verstappen, at 25, has grown both as a racer and as an individual. This past weekend in Monaco, Verstappen’s dominant performance sparked conversations about his potential and raised questions about his rivalry with Lewis Hamilton. However, Verstappen surprised everyone by burying the rivalry and offering an honest compliment to his nemesis.

Max Verstappen burst onto the Formula 1 scene at the age of 17, becoming the youngest driver to compete in a Formula 1 weekend. Over the years, he has not only surpassed the achievements of his racing-driver father, Jos Verstappen, but also fulfilled his promise by winning two consecutive World Championships. With his recent victory in Monaco, Verstappen’s tally of 39 wins has left observers wondering about the extent of his potential.

Max Verstappen understands that longevity and success in Formula 1 depend on various factors, including being in a competitive car. Verstappen acknowledges his current fortunate position but remains aware that circumstances can change, and he values the present moment rather than fixating on future records. “I’ve never been interested in breaking records, because these things only happen if you are lucky enough to be in a good car for a long time. Not everyone has that luxury. So I’m just enjoying the moment. If, after this year, it’s not happening again, that’s what it is.” While almost all drivers strive to surpass the accomplishments of legends like Hamilton and Michael Schumacher, Verstappen opts for a different path.

Verstappen’s decision to prioritize personal fulfillment and explore other endeavors beyond Formula 1 challenges the conventional mindset within the sport. Verstappen admits he could compete well into his late 30s, similar to other experienced drivers, but he questions whether he wants to: “I could if I wanted to, but I don’t think I want to stay in the sport for that long. I want to do other things.”
