The 2022 season of Formula One is all set to begin in Bahrain. The FIA has introduced changes to the regulations with an aim of bringing the grid closer this time. And Ferrari has started the season strongly by setting an impressive time in both the testing sessions. And at the heart of Ferrari’s redemption is Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard has impressed the fans and is in line for a new contract.

He outperformed his teammate and finished 5th in the drivers’ championship last year, helping Ferrari to finish third.

Binotto opens up about Carlos Sainz’ ontract

Carlos Sainz joined Ferrari from McLaren, where he’s had a successful spell. He has improved with every passing year and will look to continue his development. With an impressive debut season under his belt, the talks regarding his contract have opened up.

Ferrari’s boss, Mattia Binotto, addressed Sainz’s contract extension with Corriere dello Sport. He also admitted the process is far from over. He said, “It is not a secret that we are in the process of renewing the contract with Carlos. We are all happy, but there are still some steps to be taken.”

Binotto also revealed that both parties are optimistic about the deal being completed. He added, “We work on it every day because we share the desire to continue together. It is a matter of fine-tuning some details when we arrive . to the conclusion. I cannot predict the moment in which we will agree on everything.”

Rumors in Italy suggest that the 27-year-old will sign a multi-year contract. Sainz will also feel the need to sign a multi-year contract as it will lead to stability and continuity with Ferrari.

The Spaniard has previously signed a single-year contract with his former teams, Renault and McLaren, and will hope that it is not the case this time around. Signing a multi-year contract seems to be the trend with the likes of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc also signing a similar contract with their respective teams.

Can Ferrari win the Championship?

Earlier, Carlos Sainz suggested Mercedes are playing mind games as George Russell hyped Ferrari’s potential to win the World Championship this year. However, the Ferrari driver was not having any of it.

Ferrari remains a favorite ahead of the new season, with strong performances in Barcelona and Bahrain. Charles Leclerc was behind the wheel on the last day of testing in Bahrain. He finished second in the C4 tire, with only Verstappen ahead of him.
