The battle between Mercedes and Red Bull has been one of the major highlights in the ongoing F1 season. Along with tussles on the track, Team Principals Christian Horner and Toto Wolff also engaged in a verbal battle of sorts off it from time to time.

However, not every moment carries high drama and intensity in this battle for top honors. On occasion, they exchange light-hearted moments between them, which Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko did ahead of the Turkish Grand Prix.

Many years back, Wolff found himself actively involved in motor racing. In 2006, the Austrian teamed up with Dieter Quester, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Philipp Peter to compete in the Dubai 24 Hour race. The quartet won the race for Duller Motorsport 1, of which a prime sponsor was none other than Red Bull.

Recently, a photo of Wolff donning the blue race overalls that signify Red Bull has been doing the rounds on social media. On learning about this trend, Marko admitted he had no clue about it initially. He said, “I hope it’s not a recent photo. But seriously: I have no idea how it came about but you can be sure I had nothing to do with it.”

The 78-year-old then gave a light-hearted take on the photo, inviting Wolff to wear Red Bull’s overalls this weekend in Turkey. “Mr Wolff can also wear our overalls in Istanbul if he likes,” quipped Marko.

Can Mercedes extend their championship lead this weekend?

Last year, Lewis Hamilton sealed his seventh world title by winning in Istanbul. Although he doesn’t find himself in the same situation this year, he leads championship rival Max Verstappen by two points in the driver’s championship. Furthermore, Wolff’s Mercedes team leads Horner’s Red Bull by 33 points in the constructor’s championship.

While the Austrian outfit look more competitive than ever in the hybrid era, the Silver Arrows look to have more momentum following Hamilton’s win in Sochi two weeks ago. With seven races to go, fans can expect an intense showdown between the championship protagonists in Istanbul yet again.
