Toto Wolff must be a happy team boss after the weekend in Brazil. Dreading the end of the F1 season without a single win, the Silver Arrows team was pushing themselves beyond their limits. George Russell swooped in an unexpected win that saved the Silver Arrows from having a winless year.

Toto Wolff, looking back at the glorious Mercedes win, shared a few thoughts about the successful race. However, referring to the crash that involved seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull golden boy Max Verstappen, Toto found himself to be at a loss for words.

Max Verstappen made a bold move around the inside of the second corner during an early safety car restart. Having claimed that Hamilton left no room, Verstappen bumped into the side of Lewis’ W13. Although it was a big deal, as it cost both the drivers quite a bit, Toto refused to talk about the said subject.

He said, “I struggle to comment on the situation because it’s irrelevant to me at that stage to attribute guilt or to have a judgement call here. I’d rather be happy about the win.”

The Mercedes team principal also gave an insight into what instructions Hamilton and Russell had while they were P1 and P2 in the race.

Mercedes believes in ‘free racing’ unlike many of the F1 teams

Talking a little about the team dynamics at Mercedes, Toto Wolff stated that the Silver Arrows believe in equal opportunities and were big on their ‘free racing’ policy.

Referring to the way things work with teams like Red Bull and Alpine, where the teams calculate and make a call on the drivers’ positions, Toto Wolff said that Mercedes believes in letting things move organically.

He shared, “I think as a team, we have always stood for free racing and we have never done otherwise unless a driver is mathematically not in contention anymore for the championship and the other one is.”

“We were actually looking forward to them racing with the same tire and we discussed it ahead of the race in the strategy meeting,” he said, in conclusion.
