America’s wait to see one of their own race in Formula 1 is finally over. Williams, after a failed 3-year stint with Nicholas Latifi, has brought Logan Sargeant as his replacement. Logan impressed everyone during his time in F2. But who does he rate as his fiercest competitor? Hint: it’s another driver who is ready to make his debut in F1 with him.

Logan will carry the burden of a lot of expectations on his shoulder as he represents the US in F1 next year. The last driver from the States to race in Formula 1 was Alexander Rossi. Rossi competed in a few races in 2014 and 2015 for Marussia. As the popularity of F1 is growing in the North American nation, the addition of a driver of their own will only boost that viewership count.
Who does Logan Sargeant consider his toughest competitor?
Logan Sargeant had to wait until the final race of the F2 season to confirm his seat for Williams. While the Oxfordshire-based team made their intentions of signing him clear, the responsibility of putting the stamp on that deal lay completely in Logan’s hands. That was because Logan did not have a super license until then. However, as he finished the final race in Abu Dhabi in P5, he had enough super license points.
Williams had a fun interview with their 21-year-old driver from their academy in August. One question they asked him during the interview was, “Who is the toughest rival you’ve come up against so far?” Logan answered, “It’s got to be the battle in Formula 3 between myself and Oscar Piastri.”
Just like Sargeant, Oscar Piastri too will make his Formula 1 debut in 2023. Oscar will replace Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren, who has joined Red Bull as a reserve and developmental driver.
While most teams try to strike a combination of fielding a lineup with one experienced and one young driver, McLaren will feature both young drivers with Lando Norris and rookie Piastri.
Oscar Piastri explains the thought process behind McLaren’s decision
Oscar Piastri appeared for an interview on the Pitstop podcast last month. The Australian got candid about his interests and hobbies away from the track. However, the part of the podcast that caught fans’ attention was when he was asked if McLaren’s bid to field two relatively young drivers could turn out to be a recipe for disaster.

Oscar, agreeing it could go either way, said, “Yeah, agreed. I think for me that’s been a massive draw card of McLaren was they really really wanted me. They wanted to invest in youth. They’ve shown that through their previous years with people like Lando, like Lewis.”
Explaining the mentality at the Woking-based team, Oscar told, “So, I think it’s sort of been in the team’s spirit and mentality. I think it’s nice to have two young guys in there that can hopefully build the future and move forward with McLaren.”
