Well, if there were awards for the costliest mishap in Formula 1, our man Logan Sargeant would be taking the cake, and maybe eating it too! Clocking in at an eye-watering $4 million, Sargeant’s misadventures have made him the unexpected chart-topper on F1’s most exorbitant crash list this year. While one might be tempted to keep a safe distance from him at the next drivers’ dinner, it’s all in good humor.
Driving for Williams, Sargeant hasn’t exactly been having a string of good hair days lately. In fact, he’s been getting up close and personal with track barriers more than anyone would like. But hey, who said the path to greatness wasn’t without a few (million-dollar) bumps?
Enter James Vowles, the Williams boss, who’s thrown in a gentle reminder about the team’s own oopsie-daisy moment. “This is very much on us as well. We´ve taken someone straight out of Formula 2, put him a day and a half in Bahrain in this car, and then wished them well on a season that has been awfully challenging for rookie drivers.”

Vowles also stepped up to the mic amid the whirlwind of rumors swirling around Sargeant’s future with the team. Vowles remarked on the Williams F1 website, “Logan has very clear targets of what he has to hit before the end of the season, and we are working with him, we want him to succeed and we want him in the car next year.”

So, the moral of the story? It’s a team effort. Every win, every loss, and every ridiculously costly crash. And while Logan might be leading this unfortunate leaderboard, he’s got Williams firmly in his corner. Here’s to hoping the only lists Logan tops next year are the podium or points finishes (if he manages to retain his seat!)

Logan’s pricey crashes might be the talk of the F1 town, but the real buzz? It’s all about that one elusive 2024 Williams seat & Logan Sargeant’s contract is ending at the end of this year. So, who’s it going to be? Dive in and let the speculations begin!
Will Logan Sargeant keep his seat or will Liam Lawson swoop in?
The end-of-season drama continues as just one spot on the 2024 grid remains up in the air. The burning question: Will Logan Sargeant stay put at Williams, or will Liam Lawson, the fresh talent on the block, grab that permanent F1 seat? Sargeant, despite showing promise, had a nail-biter at Suzuka, dramatically crashing in qualifying and then bidding Sayonara following a tiff with Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas. Lawson, on the other hand, took the grid by storm, filling in for the injured Daniel Ricciardo over the past four races and potentially edging ahead as Sargeant’s replacement.
Matt Baker, joined by Bernie Collins and Anthony Davidson on the Sky Sports F1 Podcast, recently tackled this spicy debate. And oh boy, Singapore-Japan’s doubleheader sure added more fuel to the fire!
But why the uncertainty around Sargeant? Collins delves deeper, hinting at behind-the-scenes dynamics, car specs, and the mounting pressure on the team. “The mechanics work so hard, and it’s hard to keep motivation up if every weekend you’re fixing a car,” laments Collins. A sentiment echoed by many. After all, don’t we all love a shiny car that doesn’t end up in the garage every other race?

Then there’s Liam “Cracking Job” Lawson. As Davidson points out, “He ticks a lot of boxes.” Young, methodical, and consistent – he’s become the talk of the paddock. Pairing him with a seasoned driver like Alex Albon at Williams might just be a match. Not to mention, Red Bull’s overabundance of drivers might actually work in Lawson’s favor.
However, every coin has two sides. Should Williams invest in grooming Lawson, they might risk losing this rising star to bigger teams in the future. Yet, having someone who’s focused on scoring rather than scraping metal sounds tempting, doesn’t it?
