‘My family made sacrifices’–a sentence you’ll often hear from various sportspersons across the globe. A theme that transcends the boundaries of individual sports to showcase how truly alike humans are despite cultural and geographical differences. F1 and Red Bull’s beloved Liam Lawson has too opened up on how his family gave it their all to make sure his racing dream is fulfilled.
New Zealand-born Liam Lawson was the highlight of AlphaTauri (now VCARB) last year. Stepping in for the injured Daniel Ricciardo at the Dutch GP last year, he outperformed Yuki Tsunoda on his debut. What Oliver Bearman did with Ferrari this year is what Lawson did with Red Bull’s sister team. And Red Bull had somewhat predicted this. The Milton Keynes-based outfit was already making a documentary on Lawson’s journey before the F1 call-up arrived – titled ‘In the Wings’.
In the documentary, Lawson gave a special mention to his family. He said in the Red Bull TV documentary, “My parents never said that I couldn’t do something. From when I was a kid and I was saying I wanted to be a Formula 1 Driver, my dad was somebody who said, ‘You can absolutely be that’. My whole family sacrificed a huge amount for me to be able to do what I am doing.”

He then spoke about the career sacrifices that his sisters made. “Two of my sisters were national-level Irish dancers but they couldn’t do it,” said Lawson. “They had to stop. They couldn’t compete and go overseas anymore because of my go-kart racing. I absolutely love my family.”

Sacrifices all around pushed Lawson to the pinnacle of motorsport. And he justified Red Bull’s call-up with a scintillating Singapore GP drive that left his parents in tears.

At the 2023 Singapore GP, Liam Lawson’s qualifying performance was a banger. He knocked out both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez in an AlphaTauri dubbed to be a tractor. And he topped it by finishing P9 in the race, scoring his first F1 points ever. His father elaborated on the behind-the-scenes of the race in the documentary as well.
“From My point of view, it was the best performance he did over that 5 Grand Prix Stint,” said Mr. Jared in ‘In the Wings’. “It was pretty incredible. Me and Kristy were in tears in the garage. The whole team were so ecstatic and just so behind him.”
