An anonymous source once claimed that Fernando Alonso was “almost always angry” with Lewis Hamilton. The duo shared a season together with McLaren in 2007, when Hamilton was a rookie and Alonso was a back-to-back champion. Not giving an inch to each other, both the drivers were always neck to neck in competition.

The quote comes from a book by Frank Worrall, a British journalist and author, who wrote a biography of Lewis Hamilton. In his book, Frank had quoted an anonymous source.

Worrall penned down, “Lewis was unique. He put in more than most experienced drivers and just had that gift in the car. Alonso was therefore almost always angry.

However, things between the duo have changed massively over time. The two world champions no more share the cold relationship they used to. Interestingly, the Spaniard blamed the McLaren bosses for the standoff between them.

Talking about this, Fernando said, “We (he and Hamilton) talked in 2008, 2010 and 2011 and we were closer than ever in those years because we understood that in 2007 we were not very well managed by our bosses. Then we were both very young and very competitive and we needed some kind of guidance and we didn’t get it.

Lewis Hamilton joined McLaren in 2007, and that was his first season. He was fast and raring to go right from day 1 at the Woking-based team. On the other hand, Alonso had just joined from Renault after winning back-to-back World Championship titles with them.

Hamilton, as a rookie, gave Fernando a run for his money as the duo shared identical points at the end of the season. A fight between them saw Kimi Raikkonen from Ferrari pick up the driver’s championship by just one point.

The 40-year-old Spanish driver left McLaren immediately the next year and rejoined Renault. From there on, things have changed a lot. Hamilton is now a seven-time world champion, fighting for his eighth. Meanwhile, Fernando is still a two times world champion and is with Alpine F1.
