With a target of carbon neutrality by 2030 and the introduction of sustainable fuel from 2026 on, F1 has been big on making promises. But it seems like Lewis Hamilton’s off-track work and activism have been more effective in bringing about a change! Being much more than just a mouthpiece, he has supported initiatives such as Extreme E Racing, where he owns a team of his own.

But the shock to him comes in his home racing series as F1’s actions continue to defy the work and expectations that the driver and fans have. It is so because F1’s calendar continues to surprise us. With increasing races each year, pushing the Concorde Agreement to the maximum, the talks of sustainability only appear to be in the talks. Moreover, scattered races across the world, inflating the shortest possible distance to travel from 31,000 miles to 80,000 miles, only make its efforts seem like a facade.

Because you can’t say you want sustainability and then have 30 races on the calendar, right? You can’t say, we don’t want a cost cap, but we want the best racing. Or we want a cost cap, but we want the absolute best possible racing.

“The cars are getting bigger, but we still want to put them on tracks like Monaco. Right. When you start comparing these different and I call them narratives, but whatever stories that are being told to fans, they don’t necessarily match.”

Now, F1 hides behind the FIA’s shield of the ban on drivers expressing their opinions via protests. Will all this be fixed? We won’t bet our money on it.

Lewis Hamilton’s support for sustainability efforts

Being an F1 driver and calling out for environmental protection has never gelled well with the fans, even if it was Sebastian Vettel, let alone Lewis Hamilton, who was advocating for actions against climate change. So, whenever Lewis has made calls or supported an initiative, he has been termed a “hypocrite”.

But this hasn’t stopped him from voicing his opinion, as he lent his support to the protestors of Just Stop Oil, who voiced their concern at the Silverstone GP last year. He had said, “Big up the protesters… I love that people are fighting for the planet and we need more people like them.”

The message was well received by his fans, but certainly, the team had to amplify a clarification on the Briton’s part regarding everyone’s safety. All of this actually shows more effort and support for improvement than what the authorities have reflected so far.
