If we were to make a list of unsustainable sports, Formula 1 will top the charts. The motoring circus that trots the globe has a gargantuan carbon footprint. The climate emergency that the world is faced with has probably made the honchos of F1 more conscious with the sport itself aiming to go ‘Net Zero’ by 2030. But with that still being years away, what are the existing stakeholders doing to be mindful? Lewis Hamilton‘s boss, Toto Wolff, has an answer to that.

The answer is sustainable aviation fuel, and ‘book and claim’ credits. Wolff has highlighted the intent of being the torchbearers of sustainability in the sport and his objective aligns with that of their champions. Lewis, who sits at the helm of the apex of motor sporting, often highlights his concerns regarding the injudicious means of his sport. In the latest revelation by Wolff, one can see how the champion’s thought process is backed by his TP’s actions. While doing a feature with Acker Magazin with his daughter, Rosa Wolff, asked him about sustainability and climate change as the key issues and how it affects when you are establishing a company and whether it is an impediment or an aid.

Toto said, “The world is under pressure because climate change is happening. And it is perfectly clear that sustainability is a key issue in every company today. We in our team also try to contribute positively, not just with words but with deeds. We get 100 percent of our energy from green resources. We are building a solar park. We try to reduce our emissions as much as possible.”

He went on to enumerate the steps they take in everyday transactions to reduce their carbon footprint. He stated, “We fly with Sustainable Aviation Fuel, and where we do not offset Co2, we buy credits in a ‘Book & Claim’ certificate process. The fuel we use in our trucks that shuttle between European race venues is a biofuel. And there are many other approaches. That costs money, but we are willing to invest because as a Formula 1 team, we also want to be a role model with this global C02 footprint.”

Last year, when Lewis struggled to get out of the car in Baku, the world saw firsthand the porpoising torture he had to endure. With all the promises and tall claims and a car that looked like the fastest W11, the Silver Arrows entered the 2023 season campaign. However, they have been failing at it yet again. And with the man who just celebrated his 38th, there isn’t much time to spare being patient with the team that in the first place didn’t listen to him. Matthew Syed of The Times says Hamilton will find a way.

According to thetimes.co.uk, Matthew Syed said “What seems clear, to me at least, is that Hamilton will ‘find a way’. He will rage against the dying of the light. He will agitate against the disadvantage of an underperforming car. He will continue to bet on himself against the rigours of time and mechanical underperformance, seeking out the glimmer of opportunity that he’s so often found on the track. It may manifest itself in a new design or a new team, but I don’t see this story petering out just yet.” Further adding “Indeed, I think a compelling new chapter is still to come in this remarkable journey.”
