The past is a place to learn, not live in. However, it becomes difficult to stop reliving the past moments when people keep rubbing it in your face again and again. Fernando Alonso’s dreadful $31,000,000 move comes back to haunt him as a Formula 1 legend unintentionally puts salt back in the unhealed wounds of the Spaniard by bringing up Lewis Hamilton‘s past. What past did the legend bring up and why does it hurt Alonso so much?
Fernando Alonso won his only two world championships back in 2005 and 2006. The Spaniard came close to winning the Championship in 2007, 2010, and 2012. However, in the past decade, Alonso has not been able to challenge for the championship owing to his choice of moving teams at the wrong time. His move to Mclaren in 2015 after Jenson Button retired cost him dearly. His stint at McLaren was nothing short of a disaster as the team fell to the back of the grid as they partnered with Honda.
Fernando Alonso initially asked McLaren for a 1-year contract before joining in 2015, as there were chances of a seat being vacant at the then-dominant Mercedes for 2016 were very likely. However, he went on to sign a 2-year deal worth 31 million dollars, which put an end to that story. Gerhard Berger believes had Alonso made a move to Mercedes, he would’ve been a six or seven-time world champion. Berger commended Alonso’s talent and determination and suggested he’s always been his fan.

According to Krone.at, Gerhard Berger said “It’s a dream what he’s doing. I’ve always been an Alonso fan. If he had gone the Hamilton way, he would be a six or seven-time world champion today. He’s such a talented and determined race car fighter. It’s refreshing how he blossoms, with a grin on his face at every interview. Fernando is the man who will bring Aston Martin out of the woods.”
Gerhard Berger did intentionally or unintentionally rub salt into Alonso’s wounds by bringing Hamilton’s success up. However, the Austrian is happy to see Alonso at Aston Martin with a smile back on Spaniard’s face. Berger suggests Alonso is the secret formula that will help Aston Martin succeed in the future. Aston Martin is the second-best team and Alonso recently opened up about prospects of coming upgrades.

We did not see many major upgrades brought to the Grid by the teams during the first three races. Fernando Alonso suggested that it is difficult to bring upgrades in when teams are racing away from Europe because the factories are set up there. However, the long break between Australia and Baku, along with Azerbaijan’s proximity to factories, will see teams bringing huge upgrades at Azerbaijan GP. The Aston Martin driver has suggested that teams will level up and we might get to see a shuffle in the order.
According to gpfans.com, Fernando Alonso said “I think the first three races being away from Europe, it’s difficult to bring upgrades and things like that. But from now on, maybe we see the level of the teams changing a little bit, race-by-race, depending on who brings an upgrade that is good enough.”
