The most experienced guy on the grid, Fernando Alonso, has decided to change his name ahead of the 2023 F1 season. The new Aston Martin inductee wants to officially include his mother’s surname in his name. This comes almost a year after Lewis Hamilton did the same when he decided to add his mother’s name, Larbalestier, to his name.

As reported by GPBlog, the former McLaren driver is to add ‘Diaz’ after his name ‘Fernando Alonso’ from now on, given his mother’s name is Ana Maria Diaz Martinez. This has recently come to light after FIA published the entry list for next year’s F1 drivers.

Being Spanish by birth, it is a tradition to take both the father’s and the mother’s names after their names, and it seems like the former Alpine driver has followed suit. With this move, Alonso hopes to make his familial bond stronger than before.

As per the Guardian, Hamilton conveyed, “I am really proud of my family’s name. My mum’s name is Larbalestier and I am just about to put that in my name.”

As Hamilton’s parents parted ways when he was two years old, the boy from Stevenage lived with her mother till he was 12.

The Silver Arrows ace further stated, “I don’t really fully understand the whole idea that when people get married, the woman loses her name and I really want my mum’s name to continue on with the Hamilton name.”
