Whining is a form of manipulation. Drivers would do anything to gain an advantage over the others. George Russell was found guilty of whining at the Melbourne GP as the pressure from his 38-year-old teammate seemed to throw Russell out of his comfort zone. The unexpected pressure from Lewis Hamilton and the discomfort it was causing made Russell question Mercedes’ tactics. If the situation sustains in the future, Mercedes and Toto Wolff will have to intervene, which might make things bitter. Let’s find out what exactly happened.
George Russell was asked not to push after the safety car restart on Lap 3 in hopes of preserving the tire and going longer. But with Hamilton only a second behind, the 25-year-old started to feel the heat. The old folk knows a thing or two about putting pressure on a fellow driver. Hamilton closed the gap down to 4 tenths with hopes of overtaking Russell for the lead.
However, Russell was quick to radio the team about the same and whine about why he was asked to preserve the tires when his teammate was pushing. The hosts of The VF1 show with VF and Vincenzo explained how Russell has become a whiner, referring to the Australian GP team radio.

According to the VF1 show with VF and Vincenzo podcast, the host said, ” Russell’s gotten a little bit whiny with some of his calls. Sometimes his radio calls seem a little bit you know whiny like ‘Why are you asking me to manage my tires when my teammate is pushing me.” The hosts explain how at moments they were like “George just drive the damn car”
With Russell getting all competitive and questioning the team, the last thing that Toto Wolff would want is a Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton situation. But it wasn’t all bad for Mercedes, as George and the team had a lot of positives to take from the weekend in Australia.

The Mercedes seemed to be the second-quickest car during the weekend, only behind Red Bull. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton qualified P2 and P3 respectively. Despite trying his best, Fernando Alonso was not able to close up the gap with Lewis Hamilton. The 25-year-old explained how Mercedes has improved a lot over the three races without bringing any upgrades to the car yet.
According to Formula1.com, George Russell said, “Everything we’ve done this weekend has been good: qualifying was great, the start was great, the restart was great, the strategy decision was the right one. It’s just such a shame to be stood here right now. We’ve improved the car a lot, even though we haven’t brought any upgrades to the car, and we’ve got to take satisfaction in that we were clearly the second-fastest team this weekend.”
